The newest earth-friendly stabilizer on the market is Eco-Stick, manufactured by Cotswold Industries. This 2-ounce tearaway/washaway “adhesive or sticky” stabilizer is designed for hoopless or clamp embroidery where it’s impossible to put an item in a hoop or the fabric is delicate and will get hoop “burn.” Examples include CD cases, socks, ties, tote bag handles, collars, napkins, or fabrics such as velvet, suede, leathers, and satins.
Eco-Stick is ideal for open embroidery on light cottons and linens. It supports medium-density stitch counts up to approximately 12,000 stitches. For higher or denser stitch counts, another layer of tearaway can be hooped or “floated” under the hoop.
When the embroidery is finished, the excess tears easily away from the stitches and the rest dissolves in water with the first wash. All of the fibers that dissolve are completely biodegradable and will not hurt the environment.
The nonwoven stabilizer is constructed of part water-soluble and part non-water-soluble materials. So although most of the stabilizer dissolves after an initial full wash, it leaves the soluble fibers under the stitching to give the embroidery the support it needs to keep the design looking sharp and crisp throughout the life of the garment.
Eco-Stick uses the most needle-friendly pressure-sensitive adhesive manufactured to date. This helps to avoid excessive “gummy” residue leading to messy hoops needles and excessive thread breaks.
